Tough Stuff Series | Mastitis: The Not-So-Fun Sidekick to Postpartum Life

Hey there, fabulous mamas (and supportive partners, too)! Let’s talk about something that's probably not topping your "favorite things about postpartum life" list- mastitis. Yep, that dreaded word that makes every breastfeeding mother shudder. It sounds like a villain from an old-school superhero comic, but unfortunately, it’s all too real. If you've experienced it (raises hand), you know exactly what I mean. And if you haven't, well, buckle up because we're diving into everything you need to know about this postpartum party crasher.

What is Mastitis Anyway?

Alright, so what is mastitis? In simple terms, it's an inflammation of the breast tissue that can lead to infection. It usually rears its ugly head during the postpartum period when you're busy navigating the joys and challenges of newborn life. It can make your breast feel like it's auditioning for a role in a horror movie – think redness, swelling, and pain that makes you want to scream, “Why me?!” The first time I had it myself, I legit ran around naked upstairs because I was so feverish and uncomfortable.

What mastitis makes you want to do….

How Do You Know If You Have Mastitis?

You’ll know you have mastitis when you start feeling like you’ve been hit by a truck while simultaneously running a fever. Here are some classic symptoms to watch out for:

  1. Breast Pain: Not just your average "I’ve been breastfeeding non-stop" pain, but a deep, throbbing, “Get this baby off me” kind of pain.

  2. Redness and Swelling: Your breast might look red and feel warm to the touch. It’s not a sunburn, I promise.

  3. Flu-like Symptoms: Fever, chills, and general yuckiness. You might start questioning if it’s mastitis or if you've suddenly caught the flu.

  4. Lump in the Breast: This could be a clogged milk duct giving you a hard time. Not cool, milk duct, not cool.

Why Does Mastitis Happen?

There are a few common culprits behind mastitis (and genetically, you just might be predisposed to it):

  • Clogged Milk Ducts: When milk gets stuck and has nowhere to go, things can get ugly. A clogged duct can turn into mastitis if it’s not dealt with pronto.

  • Bacteria: Sometimes bacteria from your baby’s mouth or your skin can get into the milk ducts. Sneaky little devils.

  • Engorgement: When your breasts are so full they feel like they’re going to explode, it can lead to mastitis. Because, you know, postpartum life isn’t hard enough.

Preventing Mastitis: A Mama’s Guide

While you can’t always prevent mastitis, there are a few things you can do to reduce your chances of dealing with this unwelcome guest:

  1. Feed Frequently: Make sure you’re nursing your newborn or pumping regularly. Don’t let that milk sit around and cause trouble.

  2. Proper Latch: Ensure your baby is latching correctly. A good latch means better milk flow and less chance of clogged ducts.

  3. Vary Positions: Change up your breastfeeding positions to ensure all areas of your breast get drained.

  4. Stay Hydrated and Rested: Easier said than done, I know. But taking care of yourself helps your body fight off infections.

  5. Wear Comfy Bras: Ditch the tight bras that could restrict milk flow. Go for the comfy, supportive ones instead.

Treating Mastitis: How to Kick It to the Curb

So, mastitis has made an appearance. Now what? Here’s how to send it packing:

  1. Keep Breastfeeding or Pumping: It might be the last thing you want to do, but keeping the milk flowing can help clear up the infection.

  2. Warm Compresses: Use a warm compress before breastfeeding to help with milk flow. A warm shower works wonders too.

  3. Pain Relief: Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen can help with the pain and reduce inflammation.

  4. Antibiotics: If things get really bad, your doctor might prescribe antibiotics. Finish the entire course, even if you start feeling better.

  5. Rest: I know, it sounds like a joke when you have a newborn, but try to rest as much as possible. Your body needs it to fight the infection.

  6. Garlic: Okay, hear me out. If you’re a little crunchy like me (or if you literally get mastitis 5 times with every baby), you might try to ward it off yourself. Garlic is a natural antibiotic and anti-viral. (google it!) You can cut it up, let it sit for 10 minutes, and then I cover it in honey and swallow it like a pill. While doing the garlic a few times a day, I also ran to my local GNC and got an echinacea tincture. If I caught it early enough, I actually kicked mastitis a couple of times before I had to get an antibiotic!

When to Call the Doctor

If your symptoms are severe or not improving after a day or two, it's time to ring up your healthcare provider. Don’t tough it out just for the sake of it. Your health is super important – your baby needs you in tip-top shape!

Real Talk: The Emotional Side of Mastitis

Mastitis isn’t just physically painful; it can also take a toll on your emotions. Dealing with a newborn, postpartum recovery, and breastfeeding challenges can feel overwhelming. Mastitis might make you feel like you're failing at motherhood, but trust me, you're not. It's okay to ask for help, whether it’s from a lactation consultant, a friend, or a family member. You’re doing an amazing job, mama!

Final Thoughts: You’ve Got This

Mastitis is a real pain – literally and figuratively. But with the right knowledge and support, you can get through it. Remember, you’re not alone. Many moms have faced mastitis and come out the other side stronger. Keep breastfeeding if you can, take care of yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek medical advice if needed.

So, here's to conquering mastitis and continuing your breastfeeding journey with confidence. Hang in there, mama – you’ve got this!
