HAPPY HOLIDAYS! How to Prepare for Your Family Christmas Photo Shoot

The holiday season is all about family, coziness, and capturing memories that last a lifetime. And what better way to document the spirit of the season than with a family Christmas photo shoot? If you’re planning to get everyone together for a festive photo session, there are a few things to keep in mind to make sure the experience is smooth, stress-free, and produces images you’ll cherish for years to come. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you prepare for your Christmas family photo shoot!

1. Plan Your Outfits Early

When it comes to family photos, one of the first (and sometimes most challenging) decisions is what everyone will wear.

  • Coordinate Colors: Choose colors that complement each other without matching exactly. For a classic Christmas look, think rich reds, deep greens, and cozy neutrals like cream, gray, and beige. Plaids, subtle textures, and layers can add depth and interest without overpowering the image. Don’t forget I have some dresses for mom and little girls at my studio too!

  • Comfort is Key: If the kids aren’t comfortable, it’ll show in the photos. Make sure everyone is dressed in something they can move and relax in, especially if you’re planning to do any outdoor shots.

  • Avoid Logos and Busy Patterns: Simple patterns can work well, but avoid clothing with big logos, distracting graphics, or overwhelming prints that can take the focus away from your beautiful faces!

2. Choose Your Look

This year I’m offering some unique Christmas set ups to suit all styles:

Gingerbread Baking with Santa and Mrs. Claus

Imagine your little ones in a cozy, holiday-decorated kitchen, rolling up their sleeves to decorate gingerbread houses alongside Santa and Mrs. Claus! This session brings the North Pole straight to my Charlotte, NC studio, with a playful, kitchen-themed setting where kids can “bake” with the help of the Claus duo. Picture the flour-dusted countertops, trays of holiday cookies, and the warm glow of Christmas lights. This interactive, whimsical setup is perfect for capturing genuine moments of excitement, joy, and a bit of cookie-fueled silliness.

Why It’s Special: The Gingerbread Baking session is ideal for families who want candid, playful shots. The look on your child’s face as they work alongside Santa and Mrs. Claus is priceless, and these memories will bring a smile to your face for years to come!

Traditional Red Background with Giant Presents

Looking for classic holiday photos with a bold, festive flair? Step into our Traditional Red Background setup, complete with a rich, vibrant red backdrop, oversized holiday presents, and sparkling decor details. This scene is full of Christmas cheer, perfect for families who want that iconic holiday look. Think of it as a touch of Christmas glamour—ideal for coordinating red-and-green outfits, matching PJs, or even formal holiday attire for a timeless Christmas card photo.

Why It’s Special: This setting is festive yet polished, providing a versatile look that suits all ages and family sizes. With the bold red backdrop and holiday decor, your family’s holiday spirit shines through, creating that “wow” factor on every card, print, and frame-worthy shot.

Neutral Textured Background with Winter Floral Arches

For a softer, timeless look, the Neutral Textured Background with Winter Floral Arches brings elegance and sophistication to your Christmas photos. This setup features natural, winter-inspired floral arches in subtle, frosty tones that frame your family beautifully. With neutral hues and organic textures, this setting captures the understated beauty of the winter season. It’s perfect for families who love a refined, fine art style with just a touch of holiday magic.

Why It’s Special: This setup lets your family be the focus against a softly festive background, creating timeless portraits with a wintery feel. The neutral palette makes it easy to coordinate outfits in cozy neutrals, rich jewel tones, or classic holiday colors, ensuring each image feels natural, warm, and beautifully understated.

3. Use Props Sparingly

Props can add a touch of holiday cheer to your photos, but it’s easy to go overboard.

  • Classic Props: Think simple and timeless. A small wreath, a cozy blanket, a few holiday ornaments, or a mug of hot cocoa can add just the right touch without distracting from your family. My set ups on site will offer just enough!

  • Personal Items: Consider incorporating something personal, like a family heirloom ornament, stockings, or even your child’s favorite stuffed animal if it fits the holiday vibe.

  • Avoid Overcrowding: Keep it simple. Too many props can make the photo look cluttered and can take away from the focal point—your family!

4. Schedule Around Naps and Mealtimes

If you have young children, timing is everything. Tired or hungry kids are a recipe for disaster when it comes to family photos.

  • Plan Around Nap Schedules: If possible, schedule the shoot for a time when your kids are well-rested. This might mean early in the morning or right after their nap.

  • Pack Snacks: Bring along a few non-messy snacks to keep energy levels up (and avoid hanger!). Think small crackers, grapes, or any other treat that won’t leave marks on clothing or faces.

  • Arrive Early: Give yourself a bit of extra time to get everyone dressed, gather any props, and arrive at the location. Nothing starts off a family photo session on the wrong foot like rushing to be on time.

5. Prep the Kids

If your little ones are new to the idea of a professional photo shoot, spend a little time preparing them.

  • Explain the Process: Let them know what to expect, and make it sound like fun! Explain that you’ll be taking some fun pictures together, and maybe even meet Santa (if your session includes a Santa setup).

  • Practice Smiling: Try some fun practice poses at home, or play a game where they can practice smiling and making silly faces. This can help ease nerves and get them used to being in front of the camera.

  • Bring a Favorite Toy: If your child has a favorite toy or blanket, bring it along for comfort. Sometimes, a quick cuddle with a familiar item can make a world of difference in their mood.

6. Communicate with Your Photographer

Your photographer is there to capture beautiful moments and help make the experience enjoyable for everyone. Don’t hesitate to communicate any specific ideas or requests you have.

  • Discuss Your Vision: Whether you want candid moments, posed family portraits, or a mix of both, make sure to communicate your preferences.

  • Share Any Concerns: If your child has a favorite side, a specific allergy, or if you’re worried about them being shy in front of the camera, please let me know in advance!

  • Ask About Editing Options: I want you to LOVE your family holiday photos. If there’s a certain style you love and are looking for, mention it!

7. Plan for “Just in Case” Situations

Kids are unpredictable, and holiday photo shoots come with their own set of challenges. Being prepared can help things go smoothly.

  • Bring Extra Outfits: Accidents happen! Bringing a backup outfit for the kids (and maybe even yourself) can save the day if there’s a spill, a blowout, or a wardrobe malfunction.

  • Pack Baby Wipes and Tissues: These are lifesavers for last-minute cleanups and quick face wipes. I’ll also have some on site, so no worries!

8. Relax and Have Fun

One of the most important parts of a successful family photo shoot is having a relaxed, positive vibe. Kids (and cameras) pick up on stress, so take a deep breath and enjoy the moment.

  • Expect the Unexpected: Family photos, especially with little ones, can be unpredictable. Embrace the chaos, go with the flow, and remember that sometimes the most candid, unscripted moments turn out to be the best shots.

  • Laugh It Off: Don’t stress too much if things don’t go perfectly. Laugh, play, and be yourselves. Those are the moments that capture your family’s unique personality and love.

9. Make a Plan for the Photos

Once you have your beautiful Christmas photos, think about how you’ll display and share them.

  • Holiday Cards: Your Christmas photos are perfect for holiday cards! Share the love with friends and family by sending them a gorgeous holiday card featuring your family’s smiling faces.

  • Wall Art and Prints: Consider turning some of your favorite shots into wall art. Erin Wilwert Photography offers high-quality, heirloom photography products, perfect for showcasing your family’s holiday spirit.

  • Gifts for Loved Ones: Holiday photos make beautiful gifts for grandparents and other family members. Wooden photo stocking tags are a unique, thoughtful option that adds a personal touch to any holiday decor. See my post featuring this fun, new item!

10. Don’t Wait Too Long to Book Your Session!

The holiday season is a busy time for everyone, photographers included. Book early to secure a session time that works for you and your family.

Whether you’re looking for a festive Christmas Mini Session, a magical Fine Art Christmas Mini, or simply want some cozy family portraits, the best way to get the session you want is to plan ahead. Erin Wilwert Photography offers a variety of holiday options to fit your needs, so you can get those perfect shots in time for the season!

Wrapping It Up

The holidays are a magical time, and family photos are one of the best ways to capture that joy and togetherness. With a bit of planning and some thoughtful touches, you’ll be ready for a Christmas family photo shoot that’s both fun and memorable.
